Into The Unknown

Unless you have spent the summer holidaying on Jupiter, you will have noticed that there has been a lot of argument about when Tony Blair will step aside as Prime Minister. The general assumption is that Gordon Brown will move next door into Number 10, and reams have been written about whether he is a suitable man to lead the country.

Less has been written about the void that would be left at Number 11 Downing Street. Mr Brown has been there longer than anyone since the 1820s, and it is now hard to imagine - or remember - anyone else delivering a Budget speech. Many people resent a lot of the rules he has brought in, but we have at least grown used to how he does things. It will be a strange new world when someone else is in charge of finance and tax, and we may have to get used to a new approach.

Of course, the current intention seems to be that Mr Blair will not go until May, which gives Mr Brown one more Budget and who knows whether there might be a change of plan after that? Or will Mr Brown realise that he cannot possibly hand over the reins to a lesser man and try to do both jobs? Time will tell.

We will keep a close eye on the rules and keep you informed about them, whoever the Chancellor may be.
