Farewell Andre

There were emotional scenes when Andre Agassi finally retired from top-level tennis at the US Open. He probably shed a few tears as well when the House of Lords found against him in his long-running tax appeal.

The argument went down to some very nit-picking legal rules. Agassi was paid by foreign companies for using their equipment, and the money went into a foreign company that he owned. He argued that the UK Revenue could not touch money paid abroad by foreigners to a foreign company owned by a foreigner.

The catch was that he was paid for wearing those shirts while playing at Wimbledon, and there are rules to tax foreign sports players and entertainers on their earnings from appearing in the UK. The Court of Appeal didn't think this caught these foreign sponsorship payments, but the Lords did. Otherwise it would be simply too easy to avoid the charge.

So maybe his retirement wasn't to do with the advancing years - he just couldn't bear to pay tax on next year's Wimbledon earnings!
